Eddy Malave, Viola

A native of Long Island, New York, violist Eddy Malave holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from The Juilliard School, where he studied under William Lincer and was the recipient of the William Gluck fellowship. Past teachers and coaches have included Robert Mann, Lillian Fuchs, Felix Galamir, Roland Vamos, Margaret Pardee, Patinka Kopec, Joey Corpus, Heidi Castleman, Arnold Steinhardt, and Baroque specialist Albert Fuller.

Mr. Malave has performed for Pope Benedict at St. Patricks Cathedral and at Yankee Stadium during the Pope’s historic visit to the United States, and for President Bill Clinton at the United Nations during the Middle East peace talks. He has worked with Placido Domingo, Dmitri Rostropovich, Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Kurt Masur, and many other prominent artists in various venues around the world. He was a founding member of the Arethusa String Quartet, and recently gave a Baroque recital and a viola master class at the National Conservatory of Music in Amman, Jordan.

An active freelance violist, Mr. Malave has performed with prominent ensembles such as the Orchestra of St. Lukes, Prometheus Chamber Orchestra, Se Jong Soloists, Philharmonia Virtuosi, Jupiter Symphony, The NYC Ballet in Lincoln Center, ABT (American Ballet Theater) Orchestra in City Center, SAB (School of American Ballet) Orchestra in Lincoln Center, the NYC Opera Orchestra, the New York Pops Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, the Berkshire Opera (Massachusetts), Sarasota Opera (Florida), the Lake String Quartet at Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming), and the Joliva String Quartet, along with many other ensembles at venues throughout the greater New York Metropolitan area. 

Eddy also enjoys performing and recording regularly with popular artists such as U2's Bono (NetAid at Giants Stadium, N.J.), Sting and Billy Joel at Carnegie Hall (Rainforest Foundation), Barry White, Sir Elton John at Radio City Music Hall (with The Juilliard and Royal Academy of Music Orchestras), Clay Aiken, Barbara Cook, Chantel, Michael Bolton, Vanessa Williams, Craig Anderson (Wake Up in New York MTV video), A.R. Rahman (tour of U.S.A. and Canada), Patti LuPone (Songs From the Heart in Lincoln Center and tour of U.S.A.), DJ/Producer Victor Calderone (Caligula and Provacature both held at the Hammerstein Ballroom), Ted Mason of Modern English, Bryin Dale, Derek Rush and with Bryan Adams on MTV's 'Unplugged'. Eddy’s extensive Broadway credits include The Phantom of the Opera, The Lion King, Kiss Me Kate, Into The Woods, Flower Drum Song, Nine, Gypsy, Frogs, Bombay Dreams, Fiddler on the Roof, The Woman in White, Les Miserables, Young Frankenstein, Spamalot, Pal Joey, and Promises Promises.

Mr. Malave is a sought after certified teacher of the Alexander Technique, which he studied extensively with Thom Lemmons and John Nicholls.  He has presented the Technique at the British Columbia Music Teachers Conference in Surrey, B.C., Canada, at the American Institute of Musical Studies (A.I.M.S.) in Graz, Austria, at the Volterra Project in Volterra, Italy, at the National Conservatory of Music in Amman, Jordan, at the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, Connecticut, at the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, N.C., The Frost School of music at the University of Miami, Florida, The Institute for the Alexander Technique in Buenos Aires, Argentina,a and at the 2012 International Viola Congress held at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y. He maintains a private studio in New York City, and teaches the Alexander Technique in the Department of Music and Music Professions at NYU’s Steinhardt School.
